Frankly, we were surprised to discover what a good game this is. Object is to be the first to collect ten cards by correctly placing them in chronological order. Categories are sports, arts & entertainment, history, inventions & discoveries.
At first it's easy. You already have one card "Mark McGwire hits 70 home runs - 1998". The next card read to you says, "The yo-yo appeared on the market in this year" No problem. Yo-yos come before Mark McGwire (1929). The next card read says "The Boy Scouts of America were founded in this year" Does that come before or after the yo-yo? Guess wrong and you lose all cards collected thus far in this turn. Guess correctly and you may keep the yo-yo card... maybe. You decide after each successful guess whether to try for more or to stop and preserve the cards won in this turn by moving them below your "Timelock Line". When you miss, the next player gets to try for the card.
Box says that Best of Chronology is for players ages 9 to adult. We found that adults had a pretty big advantage over our teenaged kids. People our age can remember some events that are vague history to the kids. (The first video game, PONG, was invented in this year). So we made some rules adaptations to improve the kids' chances, then proceeded to have lots of fun. A few of the cards were poorly edited, which added an element of humor to the game. For example, "The first humans rode in a hot air balloon in this year" We didn't think the card referred to Adam and Eve. Did the Neanderthals stitch woolly mammoth hides together...
