Set aside the scoring dice (3 of a kind or certain "specials") and then decide: Roll the remaining (unscoring) dice and hope for a big score, or stop now and take what points you've got. If you decide to roll and then don't score, your turn ends with no score.

The 9-number game actually entails more skill than the 12 number game, because to complete the 12 door game, you must be lucky enough to roll double sixes.
